Who Is The Navajo Tribe

The Navajo tribe lived and still lives on the four corners on what is today the United States. Today they are New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. The Navajo tribe has the largest reservation in the United States today. The reservation has over 27,000 square miles. The population of the Navajo tribe is 180,462.

Navajo Wars With The United States

On August 31 1849 the United States held a conference with a group of Navajo leaders to explain the U.S. governments plan. The conference
was held in Mexico. At the conference a Mexican had claimed that one of the Navajo Indians had stole one of the Mexicans horse. A fight broke out. There was shooting stabbing and punching during this fight. The U.s soldiers shot and killed seven Navajo Indians. This fight lasted about ten minutes

The Treaty Of 1849

In 1894, Lieutenant Colonel John M. Washington signed a treaty with the Navajo. The Navajo's had to follow an obey the Treaty of 1849. The Navajo's wanted to keep their reservation (Land) so they signed the Treaty of 1849.

In 1851,the first U.S. Fort in Arizona was built. The purpose of this Fort was to control the Navajo Indian's. The Navajo's were also know to locals as the "Wild Tribe". The Navajo's leaders and it's citizen's were tired of being watched over all day and all night (24/7). In 1860, one thousand Navajo's attacked the U.S. Fort to regain their Freedom from the guards. They used bows and arrows for attacks. In the end of the attack, the Navajo's were driven off of the U.S Fort. The was abandoned the next year. In 1868 a treaty was signed by the Navajo Indian stated that they will not fight no more and the U.S. and the Navajo tribe wanted peace.


Hardships

They have been many hardships for the Navajo. A huge hardship of Navajo was the drought of 1902. In this drought it took a very long time to recieve help from the U.S. therefore people died from stravation and thrist.


The Navajo tribe today is the larest tribe of the United States. The Navajo is the strongest of all tribes in America. The Navajo now live in brick houses. There culture have stayed the same over the year. Today the Navajo and United States are very good freinds.
